US Navy and US Marine Corps Jet Fighters is a two book series that covers the entire history of US Navy jet fighters from the beginning, when many thought the advent of military aircraft would mean the end of carrier aviation. until today, when the fifth-generation F-35B/C Lightning II stealth aircraft entered service with the Navy and Marine Corps. Both volumes cover every jet fighter ever produced for the Navy and Marine Corps, including not only those that saw operational use, but even aircraft that only reached the flight prototype stage. The books also cover the history of how America's aircraft carriers grew from the ESSEX-class ships that won World War II with propeller-driven aircraft to the supercarriers of today.

In the first book, Jet Fighters of the United States Navy and Marine Corps, Part 1: The First Decade, author Burt Kinsey described the first and second generation jet fighters that appeared on the scene at or shortly after the end of World War II. These jet fighters made their first flights between 1945 and 1954, and the book covers fifteen aircraft arranged in chronological order of the date of their first flights.

This final volume, United States Navy and Marine Corps Fighter Jets, Part 2: Mach 1 and Beyond, picks up where Part 1 left off and continues to the present day. The evolution of the US Navy's aircraft carriers is picking up again and includes ongoing modifications to the ESSEX and MIDWAY class carriers and the original FORRESTAL CLASS carriers. Additional KITTY HAWK, NIMITZ, and FORD supercarriers are discussed to emphasize the continued development required to operate increasingly sophisticated jet aircraft that have reached operational status.
The thirteen aircraft covered in Part 2 begin with the Chance Vought F-8 Crusader, the first Navy and Marine Corps jet fighter capable of routinely exceeding supersonic speeds, and which out-performed its counterparts on the ground for US Navy jet fighters. As in Part 1, the scope of this publication includes all Navy fighter jet models that have reached at least the flying prototype stage, so the F11F-1F Super Tiger, F5D Skylancer and XF8U-3 Crusader III , each developed from existing aircraft structures. Also included is the F-111B, Defense Secretary Robert McNamara's vision of a complete, indestructible aircraft for the Navy and Air Force. It was a concept that was not possible at the time.
Of all the Navy and Marine jet fighters that entered service in the first decade, only three, the F9F Panther, the F2H Banshee, and the F3D Skyknight, ever saw combat. But the world was changing, and all the fighters described in Part 2 that entered service with naval squadrons saw and continue to see many combats around the world. The Navy and Marines have also fielded three types of jet fighters, as well as other types of aircraft that are intensively trained to serve as adversary aircraft in Specific Air Combat Training (DACT). These include the American-made F-5E/F/N Tiger II and F-16 Fighting Falcon, as well as the Israeli F-21A Kfir. These fighters are also included in this publication.
As this book is published in 2020, the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet is the US Navy's primary jet fighter, and the F-35C is just beginning to enter the ranks when it is declared the Navy's first operational fleet squadron. 2019. Meanwhile, a significant number of F-35Bs are already serving the Marines as they replace the AV-8B Harrier II and eventually some F/A-18 Hornets.
