3030 vs 556

3030 Vs 556 - Many people say that the AR-15 is not a good home defense weapon. They are wrong. One of the reasons the AR-15 is America's most popular sporting rifle is its adaptability. An AR-15 chambered in 223 with a 20-inch barrel is not the best home defense weapon, but there are other ways to build an AR-15 that make it as great a home defense weapon as an AR. -15 guns in the 300 Blackout chamber.

Many people believe that the 12 gauge handgun is the best home defense weapon. I disagree. The rifle has a number of issues that make it not ideal as a home defense weapon. Don't get me wrong, I think the gun is a great gun (I have a Mossberg 500 at home), it just isn't that good. Here's why:

For many people, recoil on a 12-gauge gun can be stressful. Too much recoil makes the next shot difficult and in some cases can make someone hesitate to take the first shot.

You hear it all the time, "with a gun, you point the general direction and fire, the spread makes sure you hit." This is simply not true. In a standard apartment, your target will be at most 7 yards away from you. Even with a bird shot, you only get a six inch spread at 7 yards. With buckshot, this can drop to a two-inch spread.

Most handguns don't hold many rounds. In a standard pump action gun you have 6 or 8 rounds. According to police statistics, the average shooting rate is less than 20%. With 6 rounds you'll be lucky to shoot one of them. This won't work if you have multiple attackers.

I recently built an AR-15 in 300 Blackout with a 7.5 inch barrel. I built this AR-15 specifically for home defense and it probably won't be great for anything else. So what makes the AR-15 my choice for home defense in the 300 Blackout?

Prior to the introduction of the 300 Blackout, military and law enforcement typically engaged in close quarters combat (CQB) with assault rifles such as the AR-15 223/5.56 or UZI or MP-5 using handgun ammunition. Many people thought that neither long rifle rounds nor handgun rounds were suitable for close combat. The 300 Blackout fits in between these options and is designed for indoor use with the best of both worlds.

The 300 Blackout (or 300 aac) uses a standard .223 cartridge chambered for a .30 caliber shell. I could go into all kinds of ballistics here, but let's keep it simple, and the 300 silenced round isn't as fast as the .223/5.56, which gives it less penetration (but still plenty of penetration to get through a bad guy, which is a .223/5. It won't go through a bad guy with a car in front of him like a 56.) The 300 Blackout is a .30 caliber projectile that is similar in size to a .223/5.56 and larger. Shot from a 30-06, 30/30 or .308 (in fact, the shell is the same to silence the .308 and 300).

A 30-caliber bullet is closer to the size of a handgun, such as the .357, .38 Special, and 9mm (which is 0.355 inches). However, the 300 Blackout cartridge is 1.368 inches longer than the .357 (1.29 inches) or 9mm (0.754 inches) cartridge. This allows the cartridge to hold more powder and achieve a higher velocity. (unless you use explosives.  *See more about this below)

You have an AR-15, right? You know how it works. You can take it apart, clean it and put it back together, right? The 300 Blackout just uses a different barrel. You can convert your AR-15 to .300 Blackout simply by changing the barrel. Or you can have a 2nd upper (this works best if you have an existing AR pistol.  Putting a short barrel on the bottom with a shoulder stock makes the pistol an NFA regulated firearm, you should use the pistol.)

300 Blackout ammo fits well in most AR-15 magazines made for .223/5.56. Some manufacturers' magazines work better than others, so you may want to try several magazines. This allows you to use 10, 20, 30 or 50 round magazines and even 100 round drums. This can be useful if you are dealing with multiple attackers during a home invasion. If you have a 300 Blackout and a .223/5.56, you want to know exactly which magazine holds which round. You don't split the wrong round. (I use Hexmags for the 300 Blackout, PMags for the .223, and MilSpec Mags for the 5.56.  That way I can say I keep what I have without looking at it.)

It's 308 Day!

Like I said, you know how to use an AR-15. You have muscle memory. I built my 300 Blackout with a 7.5” barrel which allows me to easily carry it around my house (it’s for home defense…). Now I take issue with one of the other writers here who says that the 300 Blackout loses accuracy on anything shorter than a 10 inch barrel. He may be right, but I built this gun for home defense. If I use it, I can be within 7 yards of my target and it is very accurate.

I finally got around to testing a 300 suppressor pistol and I can say that I got solid groups at 15 yards with nothing but cheek welds. I didn't do another test because I was in a hurry and don't have room inside my house for more than 15 yards of unobstructed view. This tells me that whoever said that 300 light from a barrel shorter than 10 inches is not correct is wrong. This 7.5 inch barrel is very accurate for a home defense weapon.

The .223/5.56 is not a viable round at subsonic velocities. The length of the projectile is equal to the bullet of a 22 rifle. What makes the .223/5.56 a viable round is the velocity and kinetic energy that goes with that velocity. Therefore, there is no good reason to use a subsonic .223/5.56 round. However, the 300 Blackout is a larger diameter tire and is still usable at lower speeds. If you add a silencer to your AR-15 and use subsonic rounds, you can shoot it indoors without damaging your ears.

(*You'll want to use ammo with a suppressor, because if you don't, the "sound" of the projectile when it breaks the sound barrier after leaving the suppressor negates most of the reason you want to use it in the first place.)
