44 Caliber Gun - Cylinder, 6 rounds, no compromises - that's what I learned from experimenting with 44 Mag revolvers. The fact that you are considering purchasing one of these handguns means that you are about to enter a whole new realm of firearms.
The incredibly high-capacity 44 Mag gun provides a powerful boom to take down anything on all fours - or two, if you plan on attacking the floor! Since you don't want to make an expensive (or cheap) mistake, I've scoured my gun collection and brought you my picks for the 44 Mag revolver. I have separate reviews for the 9mm and 10mm pistols as well as the best individual pistol lineups to make sure I cover a variety of shooting configurations. Are you interested in hidden defense or home defense? I've got your back there too.
44 Caliber Gun
Let me walk you through some of my first thoughts when I laid my hands on the .44 Magnum revolver. I shot countless 9mm Glocks or SIGs before transitioning to a 44 mag pistol. After a while, I knew I was ready for the big game, the Wanderers. why?

Frequent trigger pulls and good retention with recoil tolerance help shoot 44 Mag revolvers. However, you don't need to be a professional shooter to get one. Note that the key to handgun perfection is regular visits to the range.
One thing that limits some is the limited capacity. 44 Mag revolvers typically hold 6 rounds in the twist chamber, and some cartridges are designed for only 5. With limited cartridges also comes complicated reloading, as a round is likely to load up to 6 units at a time.
I still say that 44 Mag revolvers can do what a 9mm pistol can do in three by pulling one, hunting or carrying to defend yourself. Then all the limitations you encounter with the rifle will be changed to the "standard" ones you get used to with every cartridge!
Remember, when we say .44 Magnum, we mean the cartridge, not the weapon. First of all, I consider magnum revolvers to be second to none because they are primarily made to fire cartridges that cannot withstand normal conditions (bore diameter). That's what makes the 44 Magnum pistol so powerful.

These cartridges were artifacts that Elmer Keith brought to life. He was obsessed with the idea of designing a high-pressure charge (the base of the cartridge) that would propel heavy bullets mercilessly. He envisioned a cartridge that would allow fatigue-free penetration, and the .44 Magnum was born.
Originally intended for handgun hunting, the kit prompted Remington and Smith & Wesson to consider the potential of this cartridge. Remington soon took over the cartridge business, while Smith & Wesson introduced the first 44 Mag revolver, the Model 29, in 1956.
Although designated for the sidearm, it didn't take long for this larger cartridge to be incorporated into other firearms such as lever action, bolt action and semi-automatic rifles. Adoption of this gauge in rifles and shotguns has proven its ability against medium-sized game such as deer, antelope, and wild boar.
By now, the use of 44 Mag revolvers had outgrown the concept of handgun hunting, especially after the Model 29 made a memorable appearance in Dirty Harry. These brutal handguns present a "high risk, high reward" option for accuracy-seeking shooters.
Mm Vs 44 Magnum
44 magnum rifles, especially revolvers, are not made for that purpose, so I'm guessing you're not here for CCW (concealed firearms) work. Most of the time, if you hide these guns in a holster on your waist, you want to print them on your shirt. I would say that 44 Mag revolvers are as good as 9mm pistols when it comes to self defense.
After this caliber was adopted by some rifles for hunting, the 44 Mag revolver decided to leave the gun hunting scene and enter the self defense picture. As this shift occurred, shooters began to consider these pistols as their primary weapons, especially after the introduction of revolvers.
Most shooters may consider 44 Mag revolvers obsolete because the modern ones have not brought anything new to the gun industry. However, modern rifles now have a swing mechanism, where the cylinder hinges on a rotary tub that opens the chamber to the side for reloading.
I also appreciate the great fast charging solution for charging. Like any 6-shot cylinder layout, these quick loaders allow you to reload 6 chambers at once, rather than loading separate cartridges in each chamber.

And reloading has become a two-click process, like a little lego, by pressing the star in the center of the cylinder to release the spent cartridges and place the speed loader in the empty chambers!
The Smith & Wesson Model 69 managed to dispel a long-standing claim in the handgun field, that handguns are not primarily intended for concealment. I have tried both K and N frame S&W before trying it. N-frame rifles were massive, but K-frames offered the CCW piece of choice.
The American firearms manufacturer had plans to bridge the gap between these two frames and the Model 69 Combat Magnum was announced as a compact revolver with a devastating 44 Mag firepower. The innovation lies in the fact that the Model 69 was the first pistol to adopt an L-frame based form factor.
S&W managed to squeeze the power they usually find in heavy N-frame revolvers into a holster-friendly L-frame package. It's this mentality that drives gun owners to pick up a little devil like the Model 69 with a 2.75-inch barrel. But is this short barrel a good call on stage?
Why The .44 Magnum Is One 'bullet' That Won't Go Away
I like that S&W beefed up the Model 69 with a full-length stock that ultimately reduces muzzle rise. When you get your hands on the Combat Magnum, you'll realize that the short barrel is indicative of how this 44 Mag revolver weighs in at 34.4 ounces.
As you can imagine, light weight can affect recovery. Ultimately you want to shoot fast and flat. However, I've always seen recoil control as a subjective issue that should be brought up in a heated bar conversation between shooters. Yes, this 44 Mag revolver is very light and takes some getting used to.
For example, shooting S&W's X-frame .500 Mag revolver was not a pleasant experience, and I would never do it again. But at least it made me appreciate my recovery with a Combat Magnum and CCW-compatible barrel, which splits into two parts: a threaded barrel and a shroud for accuracy.
One thing I noticed is that the cylinder has the same scope as the N-frame 44 Mag revolvers, confirming that the Model 69 boasts improved featherweight K-frame revolvers. Slide this release button to open the cylinder and it swings with 5 parts to insert the ammunition.
Magnum Vs 44 Magnum
To add to the rigidity of the stainless steel, the cylinder has a tiny bit of space between each section, so I don't consider the 5 cartridges cylinder capacity a drawback. This 5-shooter is chambered in 44 Mag or 44 Special. Relatively speaking, that's good news for some beginner to intermediate users.
44 special, chances are if you drive 44 on mineral cartridges you will get less recovery than 44 on mineral cartridges and have less impact. However, I prefer to familiarize myself with shooting the 44 Mag for the tolerance of recoil potential.
The extended handle is made of neoprene and I never had any irritating moments with the padded surface. S&W also gives you the ability to modify this case to replace the center screw with another.
Although the Model 69 is a double action 44 Mag revolver, I was tempted to jam the hammer several times until I was happy with the single action mechanism of this revolver. This hammer's solid finish makes it easy to sit down, and I've become a fan of the Model 69's one-handed approach because the pull is flawless.
The Colt Anaconda .44 Rem. Mag. Revolver Is Back
With the Ruger Super Blackhawk you get two advantages, the first is that you carry a fantastic revolver that sooner or later reminds you of the classic Colt Python of the 50's. Another thing is that it doesn't carry a .537 Mag caliber but a mighty 44 Mag with a budget friendly price tag.
I own another variant of the Super Blackhawk with a rough cylinder. Non-sticky cylinders have a similar pattern of connection. Optionally, this new Super Blackhawk boasts a split cylinder with some steel cut (fluted) between the sections to reduce weight.
That 5.5-inch barrel gives me a hint of heavy-duty handling, and it's true. However, the weight is well distributed on the uneven cylinder, barrel and wine holder. This 44 Mag pistol has an overall length of 11.38 inches of alloy.
