Colt pistols hold a special place in my heart. I grew up shooting my dad's 1969 Colt Cobra, which he carried until he passed and I inherited. It was the epitome of craftsmanship and precision. I was excited when Colt started making rifles in 2017 and have shot every single model they have made since then. Earlier this year, Colt re-introduced one of my favorites - the Anaconda.
44 Magnum Anaconda
In the year I had two very good .44 Magnum revolvers in the early 1990's, so the 6-inch Anaconda in .45 Colt. It quickly became one of my favorite large frame rifles. It was stylish, reliable and of course accurate. Of course I was going to get one when Colt released the new Anaconda.
Colt Anaconda Explosion
The new Anaconda looks a lot like its predecessor but has some significant upgrades. The 2021 Anaconda is built with new materials and processes due to advances in manufacturing technology and metalworking since Colt ceased rifle production three decades ago.
The new model is currently only available in the powerful .44 Magnum, which allows the use of less powerful .44 Special ammunition as well. It comes in two barrel lengths, 6 inches and 8 inches, both featuring bright stainless steel. I chose the 6-inch version, which to me is easier and more natural than the 8-inch version.
New features introduced with Colt's new Snake rifle include a user-replaceable front sight, a thicker post drilled and tapped for mounting a telescopic rail, and new adjustable rear sights. Anaconda ships with hog rubber, which helps reduce breakage. Although Colt added these features to the new Anaconda, it still retains the original shape, so holsters are readily available, and since the holster shape is the same, aftermarket options are available from multiple suppliers.
My first impression of the new Anaconda was very positive. Fit and finish was excellent. The way the pipe is locked into the frame, for example, is incredibly precise and tight. And when it's locked, the gun part looks like it's made of one piece of metal, not two. The fit is just perfect.

The single action trigger is about 5 pounds and very crisp. Dual trigger power was also smooth with no fuss. The Hog grip fits my hand well and allows me to easily control and handle the trigger, hammer and cylinder lock.

My first field trip with the new Anaconda was just a practical test. I wanted to see how the new gun would perform in both single and double action. Due to current ammunition conditions, I took some of my personal loads to the range – a few light trips pushed the undercoated 240-grain bullets to 900 fps. That load is easy to control and fun to shoot. I put the new Snake through its paces by firing over 100 rounds at 10 to 15 yards of MGM steel in both single and double action.
Manual shooting at these distances was a blast - no pun intended. Anaconda was just perfect with this light load, stacking the rings on top of each other. Although these "soft" loads were pleasant to shoot, they had enough energy to knock down the target. I had to place a large stone upright under the target.

The only thing that doesn't bother me on the Anaconda is the ribbed finish on the trigger face. It's unnecessarily sharp and a smooth trigger feels and performs better.
Now for the accuracy test. I know this gun shows great accuracy at long range, but due to time and distance constraints, I only shoot at about 20 yards. I used the Ransom International Multi-Cal Steady Rest, a motorized, fully adjustable aluminum rest that can provide a very solid shooting platform. The bullets I chose for this test were Federal Premium 240 grain Hydra-Shock JHP bullets. This bullet has a published muzzle velocity of 1210 FPS with 780 foot pounds of force. This is for sure
I was only able to shoot four 5 round groups because of the ammo. The group average was 1.85 inches. For me this is a very good result and I agree that I can do better in practice. One thing I can say for sure is that the Hog Grip full house .44 Magnum rounds are a huge plus for this big snake. I've shot similar loads in other revolvers with all kinds of grips, and I find this Hog grip comfortable to hold and very effective at reducing recoil.
If the stock of this gun isn't to your liking, you can customize it in a number of ways. One thing I did do was order a small display grip from Pachmayr, which are nostalgic from the late 80's and early 90's. They were the style of grip I had on the original Anaconda and although the Hogeys are probably better in most cases, I prefer the Pachmairs for sentimental reasons.

Another custom touch I plan to add is the scope base. Although I will not be using the gun for hunting, I would like to see what the Anaconda does with fiber optics.
After my shoot with the new Colt Anaconda, I can only say that I absolutely love it. It brought me back to the early 1990s when anacondas roamed shooting ranges freely across America. I find this new model to be a huge improvement over the 90's classic with its modern features.
