44 Magnum Bulldog - The Bulldog is a 5 shot semi-automatic revolver designed by Doug McClahan and manufactured by Charter Arms. Launched in 1973. Bulldog is available in .44 Special and .357 Magnum cartridges. It was the best-selling firearm of the 1980s and is considered Charter Arms' signature weapon.

When the gun is fired, the hammer doesn't actually hit the firing pin. Under normal firing conditions, when the trigger is pulled, a small iron rod (called the transfer rod) rises, placing it between the firing pin and the hammer. The falling hammer hits the transfer pin, which in turn hits the firing pin, releasing the weapon.
If the trigger is not pulled when the hammer is cocked, the transfer lever will not engage and the weapon will not release.

Bulldogs are obviously designed for light, rapid fire, as heavier and slower bullets are less accurate.
For most types of bullets, the velocity tds will be 705 and 1000 feet per second (215 meters per second and 305 meters per second respectively).
If the Bulldog is being used for hunting, the most effective ammunition is 240 or 250 grain (16g) SWC as stated earlier. In lead type, the shot is very powerful and has great application, but the recoil is very manageable. Other types of ammo are weak or have too much recoil.

Charter Arms were designed to allow cheap production, but not cheap production. It's not a replica of an antique revolver made to sell on the cheap; instead, it's designed to provide a reliable, yet affordable option. The company has designed an excellent pistol. The .38 is also a good gun, but the Bulldog is my favorite Charter Arms revolver. The new Bulldog revolvers have a covered barrel and ejection rod, a long front sight, and are available in stainless steel. Modern grips are superior to pistols. I cut the latch to allow easy removal of the used case. Modern grips work well with factory guns.
The .44 Special cartridge is a good choice for Bulldog revolvers. Introduced in 1907, the .44 Special was designed as a lightweight and accurate cartridge. The .45 Colt stands out the most, and the .44-40 bullet is there. Trying the "hot stick" .44 Special has drained a lot of good guns. Using the 246 grain RNL bullet at 750 fps, the .44 Special is compared to the .455 Webley at 650 fps, using the 265 grain bullet. Both have great reputations in personal defense.
.44 Special is a better choice than .38 Special + P because .44 doesn't really do much more in a gun of the same weight. However, the bullets leave a true .429" barrel and the bullets are of good quality. The .357 Magnum loses a lot of velocity with the shorter barrel, but the main disadvantage of the .357 Magnum is the loud muzzle blast. The Magnum can also take a lot of shots with small gauge bullets. The .44 Special seems to be the best Bulldog cartridge.
NOTE: Author's Revolution has an issue with properly removing spent shell casings. This is not necessary for modern bulldogs.
