44 hand gun

44 Hand Gun - One cylinder, 6 cartridges, no strings attached; that's what I learned from experimenting with 44 Mag revolvers. The fact that you're considering buying one of these guns means you're about to enter a whole new world of firepower.

With an incredibly large caliber, the 44 Mag Pistol provides a powerful boom that will flatten anything that walks on all fours, or two if you plan to land an intruder. Since you don't want to make an expensive (or cheap) mistake, I've gone through my gun collection and brought you my picks for the best 44 Mag revolver. I have dedicated 9mm and 10mm pistol reviews as well as the best line of single action revolvers to make sure I've accommodated different shooting preferences. Interested in stealth carry or home defense? I have your back there too.

Let me walk you through some of the first thoughts I had when I got my hands on a .44 Magnum revolver. My transition to 44 Mag pistols was preceded by firing a lot of 9mm Glocks or SIGs. After a while, I knew I was ready for the big game, revolvers. Why?

Frequent trigger pulls and good grip with recoil tolerance help fire 44 Mag revolvers. However, you don't have to be a professional shooter to get it. Remember that the key to perfection with revolvers is frequent visits to the shooting range, because revolvers are not the type of weapon that should lie dormant in a gun case until problems arise.

One thing some may find limiting is the limited capacity. 44 Mag revolvers typically have 6 rounds in a rotating cylinder, and some cylinders are designed to only hold 5. With a limited number of rounds, this also involves complicated loading where one round is more likely to be inserted into all 6 chambers.

However, I'd say a 44 mag revolver can do with one trigger what a 9mm pistol can do with three, whether you're hunting or carrying it for self-defense. After that, all the limitations you'll be exposed to with revolvers will become "norms" that you'll get used to with every round you fire.

Note that when we say .44 Magnum, we mean the cartridge, not the firearm. First of all, I believe that Magnum pistols are unbeatable because they are primarily designed to fire cartridges whose caliber (diameter of the gun barrel) does not withstand normal conditions. This is what makes the 44 Magnum Revolver powerful.

These bullets were the artifact that brought Elmer Keith to life. He was obsessed with designing a high-pressure charge (round base) that would relentlessly propel heavy projectiles. He dreamed of a cartridge that would achieve unyielding penetration, and so the .44 Magnum was born.

With the initial intention of hunting handguns, Keith encouraged both Remington and Smith & Wesson to consider the cartridge's potential. Soon after, Remington began manufacturing the cartridge, while Smith & Wesson introduced its first 44 Mag revolver, the Model 29, in 1956.

Despite being intended for sidearms, it wasn't long before this powerful cartridge found its way into other firearms such as lever-action, repeating and semi-automatic rifles. The use of this caliber in rifles and revolvers has proven its competence for medium-sized game such as deer, antelope and wild boar.

In modern times, the use of 44 Mag revolvers has gone beyond the notion of a hunting weapon, especially after the memorable appearance of the Model 29 in Dirty Harry. These ruthless pistols introduced the "high risk, high reward" option for shooters seeking precision.

Best .44 Magnum Revolvers: Ultimate Guide

I bet you're not here for CCW (concealed carry weapons) because 44 Magnum firearms, especially revolvers, aren't made for that purpose. Mostly these revolvers are usually printed on a shirt if you stow it in a holster around your waist. I would say 44 Mag revolvers are as good as 9mm pistols when it comes to self defense.

After adopting this caliber in some hunting rifles, the 44 Mag Revolver decided to move away from the handgun hunting scene in favor of self-defense. When this shift happened, shooters began to think of these revolvers as their primary firearms, especially after the appearance of scoped revolvers.

Most shooters may find 44 Mag revolvers obsolete as modern ones have brought nothing new to the firearms industry. However, modern revolvers now have a tilting mechanism where the cylinder is suspended from a rotating crane that opens it sideways for reloading the chambers.

I am also grateful for the ingenious solution of the speed loader for reloading. These quickloaders resemble the design of the cylinders in any 6-shot shotgun and allow all 6 chambers to be filled simultaneously instead of putting individual rounds in each chamber.

Thus, reloading became a 2-click process that works by pressing the star in the center of the cylinder to release spent rounds and place the speedloader into the empty chambers, like little Lego bricks.

The Smith & Wesson Model 69 manages to break the long-held claim that includes the realm of revolvers that revolvers are not primarily intended for concealed carry. Before trying it, I experimented with S&W's K and N frames. The N-frame revolvers were unwieldy, while the K-frame gave the potential for a CCW piece.

The American firearms manufacturer planned to bridge the gap between these two frames, and the Model 69 Combat Magnum came to light as a compact revolver that has the devastating firepower of 44 Mag. The innovation is that the Model 69 is the first revolver to use an L-frame chassis.

S&W has managed to pack the power you'll find mostly in heavy N frame revolvers into an L frame holster compatible package. This is the mentality that pushes gun owners to own a little devil like the Model 69 with a 2.75 inch barrel. But is this short barrel a good choice in this range?

Mm Vs. 44 Magnum

I like that S&W reinforced the Model 69 with a full-length lower stock as this will ultimately reduce muzzle rise recoil. When you get your Combat Magnum, you will notice that the short barrel is an indicator of how this 44 Mags Revolver targets concealed shooters as it weighs approximately 34.4 ounces.

As you might guess, light weight can affect recoil. After all, you want to shoot fast and flat. However, I've always thought of recoil control as a subjective issue that stems from heated discussion among shooters. Yes, this 44 Mag Revolver is so light that it takes some practice to get used to it.

For example, shooting the S&W X-frame .500 Mag revolver was not a pleasant experience, and I do not plan to do so again. But at least I appreciated the recoil behavior with the Combat Magnum and the CCW compatible barrel that breaks down into 2 parts: a threaded barrel and a shroud for accuracy.

One thing I noticed is that the cylinder has the same volume as the 44 Mag N-frame revolvers, which shows that the Model 69 is a beefed-up version of the lightweight K-frame revolvers. Slide this release button to open the cylinder and it swings out with 5 compartments for inserting ammo.

I would not consider the capacity of the 5 round cylinders to be a disadvantage as the cylinder has significant gaps between each chamber to increase the rigidity of the stainless steel. This 5-man shooter comes equipped with either a 44 Mag or a 44 Special. In relative terms, this is good news for some beginner to intermediate users.

If you fill the chambers of the 44 Special, you will probably feel less recoil than firing the 44 Mag round because the 44 SPL ammo boxes exert less pressure and therefore less recoil. Still, I would prefer to familiarize myself with 44 Mag shooting for possible recoil tolerance.

The extended grip is made of synthetic rubber and I had no frustrating moments with the textured surface. S&W also gives you the option to change this grip by loosening the center screw to replace it with a different one.

Although the Model 69 is a 44 Mag double action revolver, the hammer tempted me to fire it several times until I liked the single action mechanism of this revolver. This hammer has a hard texture that makes it easy to undo, and the trigger pull is so perfect that I've become a fan of the Model 69's one-handed approach.

Bang: Glock's New Rimfire 44 Pistol (worth It Or Just Hype?)

With the Ruger Super Blackhawk you have two advantages, firstly, you will be carrying a colossal wheeled pistol that sooner or later will remind you of the classic 1950s Colt Python. Secondly, it does not have a chamber. 537 Mag, but a powerful 44 Mag at an economical price.

I have another variant of the Super Blackhawk that has an unthreaded cylinder. Non-grooved cylinders have a combined design that looks uniform. Alternately, this new Super Blackhawk has a fluted cylinder that has had some metal removed to carve the notches (flutes) between the chambers to save weight.

That 5.5 inch barrel made me feel like it was heavy to handle, and that's true. However, the weight is fantastically distributed between the non-threaded cylinder, the barrel and the classic grip. This 44 Mag pistol has an overall length of 11.38 inches of alloy steel
