The resort, about 220 miles south of Fort Benning, covers 15 acres along Choctawhatchee Bay, about two miles north of the Gulf of Mexico.

The typhoon shook the marina and washed away parts of the seawall, moving a lot of sand and silt into the boat ramp leading to the sea where few boats can now pass, some having to be towed by others. unable to pass at all.

"It made a mess," said James Shoemaker, community business and recreation operations officer with the U.S. Directorate of Families and Values, Welfare and Recreation (DFMWR). Garrison Fort Benning (DFMWR), said about the hurricane.

"The pier was completely destroyed," he said. "It was unusable until we replaced it. And then the whole marina had all kinds of damage. Everything near the water broke. So there were probably 10 or more boat launches, and the places where we have our jet skis, and there are several sets of steps that went down into the water, which were destroyed.

"Our canal was almost completely full. And we had a lot of boats that couldn't fit in our marina anymore. Some boats have to be towed in. A lot, you have to put the car out of the water. So that was another big thing, have our channel full."

It is mostly underwater to a depth of 17 feet, and hugs the clay beach of the resort, covering it with a kind of aluminum shield. It prevents the constant movement of water from reaching and washing away the dirt that Destin is built on.

"It's basically like a retaining wall," Shoemaker said. "It prevents erosion. If we didn't have a seawall, it would end up ruining all the property."

The first phase of the restoration focused on refurbishing the marina, "all with wood," Shoemaker said, "and that was maintained and repaired," until last fall, he said.

After the seawall is repaired, plans call for dredging a boat ramp, a project that is still in the design stage, he said.

A contract to repair the seawall was awarded in April, with an estimated cost of nearly $1 million, Shoemaker said.

The work had started two to three months ago, but the COVID-19 pandemic caused delays in filling orders for certain materials needed for seawall repairs, he said.

"Destin's highway is 98 and it travels along the coast," Shoemaker said, referring to the U.S. highway. "And on both sides of that road is every tourist thing you can think of, all the big hotels, all the amusement parks, and whatever you want on vacation, it's there.

"And our place is basically in a residential area on Choctawhatchee Bay," he said. "So it's off the beaten path and it's a quiet, nice residential area," he said. "It's a great place to stay, and that's kind of your base camp for going to Destin, and then you can go to the public beaches, or the restaurants, or whatever you want to do."
