"We love recruiting from Fayetteville; as you know it's a very military community. And the Fayetteville community is very supportive of our military," Mack said. "We have sons and daughters of the Fayetteville community spread across our ranks throughout the military. So that's a plus."

With a generation of 18-year-olds and recruits who didn't survive or remember 9/11 or have any military knowledge, Mack said he sees recruits as a "common man's job."

"The front — it conveys the Army's message and tells the Army's story," Mack said. "So that remains our number.

And Mack is happy to share some of that history herself as she explains why she stayed with the Army for nearly three decades.

"Honestly, it's the friendship ... and then all the opportunities," Mack said. "I've been able to travel to health benefits, education, all kinds of places. The Army as a whole is just a great place, the diversity — you meet all kinds of people.
