45 Acp Sig - Test: SIG Sauer P320 in .45 ACP - SIG Sauer service pistol in the popular American caliber

Although the first model variants in .45 ACP caliber reached the American market already in 2015, SIG Sauer has only added the P320 modular polymer pistol in .45 ACP to its product line in Europe for a few months now. We have tested the SIG Sauer P320 in .45 ACP for you.

The full-size P320 in .45 ACP from SIG Sauer offers a 4.7"/119mm barrel and a ten-round magazine. In the US, the .45 is also available as a compact version with a 3.9"/99mm barrel.

Although the P320 series is only five years old, SIG Sauer certainly cannot complain about the commercial success of this point-fired polymer pistol. Meanwhile, the gun has been acquired by various law enforcement agencies around the world. In addition, two years ago, all branches of the US military ordered a total of 400,000 pistols, known as M17s, which, together with the compact model M18, replace the slightly outdated Beretta M9s. One of the main advantages of this pistol series is its modular design, which allows the user to individually change the caliber, grip and overall size of the pistol.

The trademark of the P320 series is the combination of a striker-fired system with a modular chassis. The steel insert in the polymer grip has the serial number. In its home country, SIG Sauer calls this element a "Fire Control Unit". The main differences compared to the P250 series of pistols include the absence of an external hammer and the 320 trigger system. The system is based on a design that always fully strikes the striker with each cycle, a trend that has been common in the design of modern service pistols for many years. Technically speaking, this is a single-action system where pressing the trigger first automatically deactivates the safety devices and then releasing the tip. With this principle, trigger travel, pull weight, reset travel of the trigger blade and similar parameters can be adjusted to the intended use or to the procurement specifications - within the limits of what is technically possible and reasonable in terms of safety and operation.

To the trigger finger, however, the P320's trigger feels more like a semi-preloaded, medium-travel system. Aside from the easily replaceable grip, there isn't much polymer on the P320. Magazine follower and bottom plate are polymer, otherwise the gun is made entirely of steel.

To disassemble the P320 it is not necessary to pull the trigger. After operating the takedown lever, the entire upper part of the SIG Sauer can be removed.

SIG Sauer has produced the P320 in the most American of all pistol calibers since 2015. The test pistol came in the fully grown standard version called "Full Size" with a 119 mm long barrel (4.7 inches) complete with matte black surface finish, which' t SIG Sauer calls "Nitron". The pistol comes from the factory with a Medium hand size polymer grip, an extra magazine and a test target.

Unlike the smaller calibers 9mm Luger, .40 S&W and .357 SIG, the caliber change kits in the US contain the indication that the use of a smaller caliber change system on a .45 frame is "not recommended". Additionally, there are no plans to offer interchangeable parts for the P320 in .45: only the interchangeable (and freely available) P320 polymer grips are offered in various sizes and designs. There are probably some differences between the frame of the .45 P320 and the smaller caliber versions, not just the shorter .45 ejector. Perhaps this will not make the change from the larger chassis to .45 ACP to 9mm Luger completely impossible, but then, among other things, probably not all safety systems will work as the manufacturer intended. After all, SIG Sauer USA must have had something in mind when they explicitly advised to switch from .45 ACP to smaller calibers.

Equipment details such as the front cocking lugs, Picatinny rail and controls that can be operated from both sides are part of the basic design of the SIG Sauer P320.

In terms of capacity, despite the double-stack magazine, you'll have to make do with 9 cartridges. The two supplied magazines had a hole marked "10", but a 10th cartridge could not be forcibly accommodated, at least not in the available magazines. In the test pistol in .45 ACP shown in the photos, the travel of the trigger was relatively short: after approx. 3 mm light stroke, a uniform resistance of approx. 2.5 kg is overcome over a journey of a further 3 mm. A bug or a clearly noticeable trigger release was not found here. The trigger reset remained relatively short - the first 3 mm of the total trigger travel is not required for the trigger blade for another shot.

Aside from the trigger and modular construction, the P320 conceptually follows contemporary standards of pistol construction, and the .45 version is no exception. There isn't much to operate on the pistol: the P320 has a reversible magazine release and an ambidextrous slide stop lever. Only the takedown lever is found on the left side of the frame. To disassemble the gun it is not necessary to pull the trigger. The short, but well-shaped beaver tail and the fine, non-slip textured area give a subjectively very good hand position. The steel sights correspond in material, dimensions and sighting pattern to the usual requirements for a modern self-defense pistol. In low-light conditions, three luminous white dots aid in target acquisition. There was little to criticize in terms of handling. The barrel showed noticeable side play in the chamber area, but was bomb proof in the slide housing near the muzzle. By the way, SIG Sauer manufactures the barrel from stainless steel, just like the frame. The play of the slide on the guides was clearly noticeable, but for a modern service pistol it was relatively small and never audible even when shaken. The metal and polymer finish seemed very accurate overall and there were no unsightly tool marks in the gun.

The sights of the SIG Sauer P320 with their white dots are made of steel. They can be adjusted on the side.

In terms of handling, test pistol made an all-round pleasant impression. The magazine release as well as the slide stop lever were easy to reach with the thumb, but with a conventional two-hand grip with both thumbs pointed at the muzzle, otherwise just far enough that the controls could not be accidentally operated.

Because of the slim magazine and equally slim grip, the hand position is more like a conventional 9mm pistol than a typical .45 with a double row magazine. Without exception, the test rifle ejected the fired cases quite positively. The P320 always rode reliably even with the weakest factory cartridges, even with a three finger grip and extra slack wrists. Firing behavior remained pleasantly smooth despite the relatively light weight for a service-sized .45. The muzzle flip was noticeably stronger than, say, a pistol in 9mm Luger, but felt recoil remained well controllable even when firing +P ammunition. The trigger of the .45 proved to be effective in the field both in rapid shooting and in comfortable target shooting. For a medium-length trigger that doesn't require additional manual safety devices, the P320 shot beautifully out of the box. For purely sporting use, a sharper trigger would be desirable, as would an adjustable rear. However, this version is not designed for competition, and as an alternative, SIG Sauer also offers the P320 X-Five version for the sports industry.

Given the appealing shooting performance and clean craftsmanship, the .45 ACP version of the P320 seems to be a good choice for anyone interested in a full-fledged polymer pistol in the old American caliber. In addition, the P320 is also conceptually sound due to its safe disassembly and modular design with adjustable grip. And who knows: maybe in the future the trick of extending the module system of the P320 in 9mm, .357 SIG and .40 S&W to the .45 models will succeed.
