On November 16, 1970, the Air Force issued a Request for Proposals for a 30 mm rapid-fire gun for use on the AX Close Air Support Aircraft. In June 1971, General Electric and Filco Ford were selected to build a prototype gun designated GAU-8. In addition to the development of guns, the contract called for the development of four types of ammunition: armor-piercing incendiary, high-explosive incendiary, semi-armor-piercing high-explosive, and target training.
The GAU-8 was not ready for the AX flyoff competition between the Northrop A-9A and the Republic A-10A, so the General Electric M61A1 "Vulcan" 20 mm cannons were installed to test the initial weapons of these two aircraft.
The first flight test of GAU-8 took place on February 26, 1974. The first gun was fired in flight with combat ammunition on June 19, 1974. The Avenger has fired more than 39,000 rounds.
